Campus Weathers the Storm

Tropical Storm Hanna has passed through the Triangle and Duke officials report the campus suffered no major  damage. Tonight’s football game between Duke and Northwestern will proceed as planned, and other campus activities are generally on schedule as well.

Update: Athletic games still on, Tailgate limited

As Hurricane Hanna approaches North Carolina, Duke officials have taken several steps to prepare for severe weather.

  • All athletic games scheduled for the weekend remain on schedule, including the 7 p.m. Saturday football game against Northwestern. The Northwestern team arrived in Durham today.
  • The planned pre- football game student tailgate party will be held as planned, but there will be no cooking allowed and no tents provided because of expected high winds. Only water and pre-packaged foods will be offered.
  • Grounds crews are removing tents and other outdoor furniture from the tailgate and other campus areas. Trash cans will be distributed only after the storm passes.
  • Facilities and Management workers will be on standby to deal with any maintenance issues. Problems can be reported by calling 684-2122.
  • Duke Dining has a seven-day supply of food available in case of long-term power outage

Marine Lab to be evacuated

The Duke Marine Lab has implemented its evacuation plan for undergraduate students, who will leave Beaufort by 12:30 p.m. today. Housing has been provided for them on the Durham campus.

Classes at the Marine Lab for Sept. 5 have been cancelled.

The Marine Lab will close all regular business at 3 p.m. today (Sept. 5) and will reopen after the storm has passed.  Visitation Day at the Marine Lab, scheduled for Sept. 6, has been cancelled and will be rescheduled.

Football game remains on schedule

Duke officials said Thursday that current plans are for Saturday’s football game to begin at 7 p.m., as scheduled. Duke will play Northwestern University in Wallace Wade Stadium.

Duke officials are continuing to track Hurricane Hanna and, as needed, will announce updates about the football game and other campus activities.

Watching Hurricane Hanna

Duke officials are closely monitoring the forecast and projected path of Hurricane Hanna. Current forecasts indicate that the storm may make landfall in South Carolina near the North Carolina border early Saturday before moving through the Triangle area.
